Nice article Chris, great old lady analysis. I actually think Sleeping Beauty is the Faires' story, as I think they have the most screen time and they are always driving the story along.

Thanks Chris, good advice, timing is giving me the most trouble in my animations and it obviously shows, I'll have a go at re-timing it to a beat and I'll post the results.

Here is my latest animation test presented for critique. It builds on the issues and lessons learnt from my last animation (see this thread ). These being turning objects in space and giving life to an inanimate object. I also wanted to see if I could animate in perspective and followed Richard Wil...

You mean some scenes with Walt Disney surrounded by animators as he reviews scenes a Moviola?! Wow great, I'll be looking forward to that! Not quite, like I say it's a recreation, so it's actors but the dialogue is taken from transcripts of real sweatbox sessions. Isn't there a film of the sweatbox...

Yeah I watched Sword in the Stone the other day and noticed how good the hands were in it. It's quite a nice film actually, I wasn't expecting too much from it. I loved Madam Mim.

I didn't know about these, Chris's explanation justifies it but it still takes away a bit of the magic. I wish I hadn't clicked on it. :(

Yeah it's on the Blu Ray which I just watched last week, fantastic! There's a great recreation of the Sweatbox on there too.

Cheers,

Hi, I'm looking for critiques of this little bouncing ball exercise (sorry  ). It is a character ball that can't decide which way to go. I am aiming to convey this through acting alone, so there are no props or shape changes. I did it in Flash just so I didn't have to worry about my drawing an...

Hi Hans, I'm an admirer of your work and love reading your blog! You're very generous to the community with your posts, and it's because of your posts on timing to music that I can't help tapping out beats when I watch cartoons now. I hope that you have time to contribute to this forum too. All the ...

I've just posted on the AWN forum on a post about emphathising with animated characters as I've just this minute finished watching Dumbo for the first time and I had so much empathy for him that it made me cry when he visits his locked-up mother. I felt so sorry for them both. It's an amazing empath...

Great post chdoyle! It would be great if you could illustrate your points with screengrabs from the film (if it doesn't infringe copyright).

By the way (I should have introduced myself) I am a woman not a man, my name is Claire. ;)

You also might be interested in seeing an animation I made as test (I have seen another one on Youtube too, have you seen it?) with Aurora. I have never uploaded anything to Youtube but I will try to upload my test. I certainly would be interested in that. Maybe you could have section on this forum...

Unfortunately their striving for visual perfection on so many levels really put the shackles on the animators. Yeah that's true and it is also interesting how Earl's colour scheme for the fairies with their black bodices visually anchors them down compared to seeing them floating in the same animat...

What about the first edition of The Art of Animation by Bob Thomas? It inspired a lot of animators like Andreas Deja and features a lot of info on the making of Sleeping Beauty. I've also seen the third edition which has a nice historical overview too and covers the making of Hercules. There is also...
